The brief, met

What you actually get when you hire a quiz master

An MC with a slide deck is not a quiz master. Hiring one means somebody owns the room for sixty to a hundred and twenty minutes — the writing, the pacing, the scoring, the tie-breaker nobody planned for, and the recovery when a projector dies four questions in. Here is what is actually inside the engagement.

An original question set

Written for your audience after a briefing call — your industry, your in-jokes, your milestones. Never a recycled deck. Difficulty is tuned so the room stays in it to the last round.

Buzzers, scoring and screen

Wireless buzzer sets for lockout rounds, a live leaderboard on the main screen, and scoring handled by our team — so your people are playing instead of tallying.

A host who reads the room

Someone who can tell a forty-person leadership offsite from a nine-hundred-seat auditorium and change register accordingly. Pace, banter and round length adjust live.

Formats that scale both ways

Table teams of six, individual lockout finals, or hybrid rooms with remote joiners answering on their phones through our own quiz app.

Something to report afterwards

Participation, round-by-round scores and final team standings, so an L&D or HR lead has more to show for the budget than photographs.

A rehearsed failure plan

Backup buzzer sets, an offline copy of every round, and a host who can run the whole thing on a hand mic if the AV gives up completely.

Ninety seconds

See what a Quiz Granny room looks like

Buzzers, leaderboards, and a few hundred adults competing considerably harder than they expected to. This is footage from our own events — not a showreel of stock clips.

The person holding the mic

Meet your quiz master

Manas Chaturvedi founded Quiz Granny and hosts most of what we run. He has taken the mic in hotel ballrooms, university auditoriums, co-working lounges and conference halls — from an ISHRAE industry conclave with a live leaderboard on a twenty-foot screen, to Yuva Mahotsav on a campus stage in front of several hundred students.

When you hire a quiz master, what you are really hiring is a judgement call made forty times an hour: when to push a round harder, when to cut it short, when a wrong answer is funnier than the right one. That judgement is the product. Writing the questions is the easy part.

He also writes about the mechanics of it — why quizzes hold attention when presentations do not — drawing on game-design work such as the Octalysis framework. You can read that thinking on the Quiz Granny blog, or watch past shows on the Quiz Granny YouTube channel.

Seven formats you can hire a quiz master for

Same host, seven different builds – whether you need a quiz master for a corporate event, a college fest or a wedding. The format gets chosen on the briefing call, against your room, your headcount and what the evening is actually for.

Format 01

The "Prelims to Podium" Quiz

The classic championship build: elimination and preliminary rounds, then a stage final with audio-visual questions, lockout buzzers and a live leaderboards and scorecards. Six to eight finalist teams, an audience watching, and a champion at the end of it. The most competitive format we run.

Good for: grand finales, annual days, state and national quizzes, quiz championships.

Format 02

The "Playground" quiz

The quiz plays on the main screen; everyone in the room joins from their phone browser and answers live. No app to install, no headcount ceiling — hundreds of people playing the same question at the same time on QG Playground, our own live quiz platform.

Good for: conferences, large events, town halls, casual and high-energy settings.

Format 03

The "Coffee-Table" quiz

Six to eight to a table, around ten teams in the room, and a set built for laughs as much as points. Audio-visual questions, answers taken on buzzers, answer sheets or phones — whatever suits the space.

Good for: café-style evenings, team offsites, get-togethers, small group gatherings.

04 · Gamified training quiz

Your L&D content turned into rounds. Compliance, product or process material that people actually retain, because they competed over it. Scored, so you can report on it.

05 · Hybrid and remote quiz

A room in one city, participants on their phones from multiple others, one shared leaderboard. Run through our own quiz app, so remote players are not second-class participants.

06 · Social, wedding and kids' party quiz

Sangeets, milestone birthdays, reunions. Rounds written about the people in the room — the couple, the family, the batch — which is exactly why they land.

07 · Season-long campus programme

Not a single evening. Our Campus Quiz Ecosystem Program runs a quizzing calendar across an academic year, building a club and a culture rather than one event.

Formats 01, 04 and 07 sit under Competitive Quizzing. Formats 02, 03, 05 and 06 sit under Engagement Quizzing. The hybrid build runs on the QG Playground.

Four steps, no surprises

How to book a quiz master

Most events are locked in within a week of the first call, and nothing here requires you to know anything about quizzing.

01

A 20-minute briefing call

Date, city, headcount, room, and what the evening is for. We ask about your people — the running jokes, the milestones, the departments that need mixing.

02

A written proposal

Format, round structure, run time, equipment list and a fixed fee. One page. You know exactly what is included before you commit anything.

03

We write your quiz

An original set, built for your audience, with a difficulty curve tested against the headcount. You get a preview of the round structure — never the answers.

04

We show up and host

Equipment on site early, AV checked with your team, and the quiz run end to end. Scores and standings sent across afterwards.

Buyer’s checklist

How to choose a quiz master — five things to ask anybody, us included

Most people book their first quiz host on a recommendation and a phone call, and find out on the night whether it was the right call. These five questions separate a professional quiz master from an entertainer with a trivia deck, and they work on any shortlist — ours included.

1. “Who writes the questions, and when?”

If the answer is vague, or the set already exists, you are buying a rerun. Ask when writing starts relative to your date, and ask to see the round structure — not the answers — before the event. A host who cannot show you a structure a week out has not written it.

2. “What happens when the AV fails?”

Projectors die, laptops refuse the venue’s HDMI, and buzzer receivers pick up interference from the DJ rig. The answer you want is specific: backup sets, offline copies, a version of the quiz that runs on a hand mic. “That has never happened” is not an answer, it is a warning.

3. “How do you handle a disputed answer?”

Every quiz with stakes produces one. What matters is whether the host has a rule they state up front and apply consistently, or improvises under pressure in front of your leadership team. Ask how ties are broken too — the tie-break is the moment the evening is remembered by.

4. “Have you hosted this size of room before?”

Forty people in a boardroom and four hundred in an auditorium are different crafts. A host who is excellent at one can genuinely struggle at the other. Ask for a comparable event — comparable in headcount and room type, not just in client logo.

5. “What do we get afterwards?”

If you are spending an L&D or HR budget line, somebody will ask what it produced. Scores by team, participation, round-by-round performance on the training content — these should be offered, not requested. Most hosts do not offer them because most hosts do not capture them.

And one thing not to over-weight

Client logos. Everyone in this industry has hosted for a recognisable brand at some point, and a logo wall tells you nothing about whether the questions were any good. Ask about the room, not the letterhead.

Planning something specific? We have written at length about corporate offsite activities, team-building quiz ideas, quiz ideas for annual day events, and how to organise an inter-college quiz competition — useful whether or not you end up hiring us.

A straight answer

Quiz master charges: what shapes the fee

Offline quizzes, run end to end, start from ₹10,000. Past that, we do not publish one flat fee, because a forty-person table quiz in Bhopal and a nine-hundred-seat stage final in Delhi are not the same job. What we will do is give you a fixed, written fee within 24 hours of the briefing call, not a range that quietly moves later.

Five things move the number, and it is worth knowing which before you ask anyone in this industry for a quote:

Get a fixed quote

Tell us the date, the city and roughly how many people. You will have a written proposal with a fixed fee inside 24 hours.

Where we host

Hire a quiz master in your city

We run quiz events anywhere in India. These city pages cover the places we get asked about most. Travel is part of the quote from day one, never a surprise later.

Somewhere else in India? Ask anyway — we travel, and we will tell you honestly whether it makes financial sense for your budget.

Before you ask

Questions people ask before they hire a quiz master

Both are right. “Quiz master”, “quizmaster”, “quiz host” and, in India, “quiz anchor” all describe the same job: the person who writes or reviews the questions, runs the rounds, keeps the score and settles disputed answers. When you hire a quizmaster in India through Quiz Granny, the person who writes your quiz is the person who hosts it.

Offline quizzes, run end to end, start from ₹10,000. Past that, there is no single figure, and be wary of anyone who quotes one before asking about your event. The fee is driven by format, headcount, how much bespoke writing is involved, the city, and run time. A short table quiz for forty people at an offsite and a buzzer-based stage final for a nine-hundred-seat auditorium are genuinely different jobs. We give you a fixed written fee within 24 hours of a 20-minute briefing call, and it does not move afterwards.

Two to three weeks is comfortable. That gives us time to write an original set around your audience rather than adapt a generic one, and to arrange buzzer equipment for your city. We have turned events around in under a week, but the questions are better with more notice. The December-to-February corporate season and the campus fest window book out earlier, so ask sooner if your date falls in either.

Yes, and it is usually the round people remember. On the briefing call we ask about your milestones, your products, your offices, the internal jokes and the people everyone knows. Those become a dedicated round. The rest of the quiz is written against your audience’s general profile — age range, region, industry — so the difficulty curve actually fits the room in front of us.

We bring the buzzer sets, the question deck, the scoring system and the leaderboard. From you we need a screen or projector, a sound system with at least one handheld microphone, and power at the host position. For hybrid events we also need reliable Wi-Fi for players joining on their phones. We run an AV check with your team before doors open, and we carry an offline copy of every round in case the projector fails.

From about twenty up to several hundred. The number changes the format rather than ruling anything out: small groups work best as table teams where everyone plays every round, while large audiences work best as a stage quiz with named teams competing while the room plays along from their seats. Tell us the headcount and the room, and we will recommend the shape.

Yes. We host in English, in Hindi, and in the mix most Indian rooms actually speak. Language is agreed on the briefing call, and the question set is written in the language it will be hosted in rather than translated afterwards — wordplay does not survive translation.

Yes. We are based in Bhopal and run quiz events anywhere in India. Travel is quoted upfront as its own line, so you can see exactly what it adds, and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it at your budget.

An MC keeps an agenda moving. A quiz master runs a competition — which means writing it, pacing it, ruling on disputed answers, managing a tie-break nobody planned for, and keeping four hundred people invested in the outcome. The hosting is the visible part; the question design and the live judgement calls are what actually decide whether the room stays in it.

That is a large part of what we do. Your compliance module, product knowledge or process material becomes the question set, and people compete over it instead of sitting through it. You get scores by team and by round afterwards, so there is something to report against — which is usually what an L&D lead needs the session to produce.

Tell us the date. We will tell you what the room will look like.

A 20-minute call, a written proposal with a fixed fee inside 24 hours, and an original quiz written for your people. Hosted across 12 Indian cities.
